Catholic churches in Willmar, Spicer set to resume public masses Wednesday

NOTE:  This is an update to the story published earlier, saying masses would begin Tuesday.   In the time since that information was gathered, John LeVoir, Bishop of the New Ulm Diocese issued a letter saying churches in the Diocese will adhere to Governor Walz Executive Order allowing churches to open Wednesday at 25% capacity.  Here is an excerpt from his letter..."In the next couple of days, Governor Walz will issue a new executive order that allows faith communities to accommodate 25 percent of seating capacity up to 250 people for worship services - both inside and outside - beginning May 27. Governor Walz and his administration hope that when faith communities gather, they will do so consistent with public health guidance. We pledge to be good citizens when offering worship in our communities and to work with public officials to promote the common good. As you know, the Catholic bishops of Minnesota believe that the prior rules limiting faithbased gatherings to ten people unreasonably burdened the liberty of the Church to bring Mass and the sacraments to the faithful."

(Willmar MN-) Catholic churches in Willmar and Spicer will be resuming public masses on Wednesday.   Father Steve Verhelst of the Jesus Our Living Water group of churches says daily public masses will resume at St. Mary's Church in Willmar and Our Lady of the Lakes in Spicer. Verhelst says he looks forward to seeing living faces in the pews again...

...Verhelst says he wants to make it clear that people are not obligated to come to mass if they are ill or feel uncomfortable...

...Verhelst says they are making changes in the service and taking safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19...

...They are limiting seating at St. Mary's to 1/4th capacity.   They ask people to go online at ourlivingwater.org and disclose which weekend service they plan to attend, or they can call 235-0118. Those who attend weekday service do not need to do so. St. Mary's will be having daily masses at 9 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and noon mass Wednesday and Friday.
