Kandiyohi County Fair cancelled

(Willmar MN-)   The news broke sooner than they would have liked, but the official word is out...the 2020 Kandiyohi County Fair has been cancelled.   Fair President Darrell Fostervold says the news was leaked on Twin Cities media on Wednesday, then it hit social media, so at 11 a.m. Thursday they issued a press release on the fair's Facebook page.  Fostervold said with all the requirements that go into COVID-19, he didn't think they would have enough people...

...The news release said  "It is with great disappointment; the Kandiyohi County Fair Board announces the cancellation of the 2020 Kandiyohi County Fair.  We were hoping to not make this kind of announcement.  But considering the current conditions and uncertainties of COVID-19 restrictions the board felt this was the best decision for the Kandiyohi County Fair and everyone involved in our Fair.  While cancelling the Fair was not an easy decision, the board agrees, it is the right thing to do.  Our priority is the safety and health of our community, volunteers, vendors, carnival, 4-H and FFA youth and our exhibitors."

This year's fair had been slated for August 5th through the 8th, and it would have been the 120th Kandiyohi County Fair.   Jill Wohnoutka of the Kandiyohi County Historical Society says records show there was a Kandiyohi County Fair held in 1918 and 1919, during the Spanish Flu epidemic, but there was none in 1946 over concerns about polio.   Fair officials say they look forward to celebrating 121 years next year at the 2021 Kandiyohi County Fair August 11-14th.  The Benton and Yellow Medicine County Fairs have also been cancelled.
