(Willmar MN-) Two Doctors at Carris Health in Willmar say this area has not been immune to bed and staffing shortages during the current surge of the DELTA Variant of COVID-19. Dr. Ken Flowe is Physician Director for Acute Care and the Emergency Department Medical Director, and says as of Friday, there are no ICU beds available...

...Flowe says there is also a staffing shortage at Carris. They've put on job fairs in Willmar and St. Cloud, and they are now looking at tapping into the unlicensed labor pool to help with patient care...

...Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Lucio Minces says while they are seeing some cases of people who have been vaccinated coming down with DELTA, the degree of illness is much lower than unvaccinated people who become ill. Very few of the so called "breakthrough cases" have to be hospitalized....

...Flowe and Minces says unvaccinated people become reservoirs for the virus, where it creates variants like DELTA. The variants then infect vaccinated people, who have that protection. Flowe says we are on the verge of a variant being created that there is no vaccine for. Kandiyohi County's vaccinate rate is currently 47.2% of the eligible population.
