(St. Paul MN-) There will likely be a major push to legalize recreational marijuana in 2019 with Democrats taking control of the Minnesota House. Representative Mike Freiberg (FRY'-burg) of Golden Valley says he introduced a bill last session to start the conversation using a "public health" approach:
Freiberg says advocates would like to be able to grow their own marijuana and he's open to considering it. His bill did not dedicate the additional tax revenues. Freiberg says there's pretty broad acknowledgement among Minnesotans that prohibition hasn't been successful:
Freiberg says he introduced a bill last session to start the conversation and believes there will be bi-partisan support this year. Most law enforcement groups in Minnesota oppose the legalization of recreational cannabis as well as representatives Dave Baker of Willmar and Tim Miller of Prinsburg. Governor-Election Tim Walz is in favor of legalization and expunging the records of many pot-related offenders.
