Invest in Willmar

(Willmar MN-) The Willmar City Council will likely take the final step to implement a half-cent local option sales tax after a hearing this coming Monday. The group Invest in Willmar spearheaded the effort, and the Invest in Willmar Board meets at 3 p.m. today at Willmar City Hall. On the agenda is discussion of the construction management process with Terwisscha Construction. The tax will raise about 30 million dollars in 13 years and will fund 6 projects; a new event center, a new community center, athletic fields, improvements to Swanson Field, improvements to Robbins Island, and improvements to the city's storm water drainage system. A subcommittee has been created for each of the projects, and the Swanson Field subcommittee meets Thursday at the Swanson Field batting cages. Invest in Willmar's Matt Dawson says since master plans are already in place for Robbins Island and Swanson Field, those projects will likely be done first...

...If all goes as planned, Willmar businesses will begin collecting the taxes this summer and the city will start collecting the funds in October.
