On Friday, the Renville County Attorney’s Office announced that on Thursday, May 12, 2022, following a one-day jury trial, a Renville County jury found a Bird Island man guilty of Gross Misdemeanor Domestic Assault.
The jury, comprised of 4 men and 2 women, deliberated for 15 minutes before delivering the guilty verdict. Renville County Attorney Kelsie Kingstrom was the prosecutor in the case.
Brian Joseph Gewerth, age 42 of Bird Island, MN, was found guilty based on his actions that took place in July of 2021. Defendant also has a prior history of domestic assault.
According to the criminal complaint and testimony at trial, Mr. Gewerth and his life partner were residing at Victim’s residence when an argument broke out over non-payment of rent. The Victim testified that both Mr. Gewerth and his life partner assaulted him around noon, stating, “I thought they were going to kill me.” Mr. Gewerth had forcefully pushed Victim down a hallway approximately 6 times and because of this, Victim fell and hit his back on a kitchen chair.
Mr. Gewerth will be sentenced on July 11, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. at the Renville County Courthouse.
“I am committed to doing all I can to ensure the safety of all citizens of Renville County,” said County Attorney Kelsie Kingstrom. “That includes advocating for victims of domestic violence.”
