(Willmar MN-) The Kandiyohi County Department of Emergency Management has issued a "to-do list" to help people avoid wet basements. They say to prevent water seepage around your home, remove snow from around your home in a 3 to 5 foot perimeter, remove snow from the roof and remove snow and ice from gutters. Also, remove snow from downspouts and thaw them out if possible.
Before your basement gets wet, they recommend you have cleaning equipment on hand like bleach, gloves, a mop and broom, boots, facemask and eye protection, towels, sponges and a first aid kit. They also remind you to have a bucket, heavy duty work gloves, all purpose cleaner and drinking water on hand.
If there's damage, they say take photos before you begin cleaning-up for insurance purposes. And don't forget there is sand and sand bags available behind the Willmar Community Center, with the sand to be used for sand bags only.
