(Willmar MN-) Kandiyohi County Auditor Mark Thompson says voter turnout in the county was 95%. Thompson says of the county's 24,673 registered voters, 23,499 votes were cast. He said 8992 were done by absentee ballot, and 14,507 were done at the polls on election day. They will continue to collect absentee ballots through this coming Tuesday, and if they are postmarked November 3rd or before, they will be counted toward the election. Afterwards, the election results will be canvassed and the results will be certified.
If, after the results are canvassed, a losing candidate can request a recount at the cost of the responsible governing body if the margin of loss was less than half of one percent of the total votes (if there was between 400 and 50,000 votes cast), or less than one quarter of one percent (if there were more than 50,000), or ten votes or less if there were 400 or less total votes.
As things ended on election night, Steve Gardner defeated incumbent Steve Ahmann in the Kandiyohi County District 2 Commissioner's race by 14 votes. Ahmann says he will decide if he will ask for a recount after the vote is canvassed. And in New London, Steve Slominski edged Erik Hatlestad for a New London City Council seat by 3 votes.
