(Willmar MN-) An SUV with three teens was involved in a police pursuit in Willmar early this (thurs) morning. It ended when the vehicle hit a tree and rolled onto it's side. Willmar Police Chief Jim Felt says it started at 3:35 a.m. when a police officer tried to stop a 2004 Toyota Rav 4 near the intersection of 10th St NE and North Business 71 for not having any taillights. When the officer activated his emergency lights, the vehicle increased its speed and fled westbound on Ella Ave. The officer continued to follow the Toyota as it drove through various streets on the NW side before turning and striking a tree at 12th St and Gorton Ave NW, tipping on its side.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as a 15 year old male from Willmar. There was also a 14 year old female and 13 year old male passenger. No one was injured and did not require any medical treatment. Felt says they learned the 15 year old driver had taken the car without permission and did not have a driver’s license. He was taken to the Prairie Lakes Detention Center pending charges of fleeing police in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, stop sign violations, etc. The 13 and 14 year old passengers were released to their parents.
Willmar Police were assisted by the Willmar Ambulance, Willmar Fire Department and Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad. The vehicle was towed from the scene with significant damage.
