Mark Van de hei

(Houston TX-) An astronaut with ties to Minnesota and Willmar is about to set a record. Mark Vandehei has been on The International Space Station since April and his stay has been extended to next March. That means Vandehei will have been in space for 353 days which is a new record for an American astronaut, breaking previous records held by Scott Kelly. Vandehei talked about breaking the record on his You Tube channel...

...Vandehei says during his long time away from Earth he still tries to stay grounded...

...Vandehei says staying in space for long periods is a good test to see how to stay healthy during even longer space trips, like to Mars in the future. Vandehei lives in Houston Texas but grew up in Minnesota and went to St. John's University. His sister, Lisa Dawson, lives in Willmar. Vandehei this week spoke by video link to school children across central Minnesota. Last month he had to cancel a space walk due to an undisclosed medical condition.
