Walz earlier this week activated the Minnesota National Guard to form skilled nursing "response teams" to provide support to long-term facilities experiencing staffing shortages. Walz is also proposing providing $50 million in federal funding to facilities to help with the hiring and retention of staff.  

Senator Andrew Lang is also a Major in the Minnesota National Guard and says during the pandemic the guard members have been called on to do many things, but they can handle it...

...Lang says while he is not speaking as an official spokesperson for The Minnesota National Guard, he feels mobilizing guard members to help in hospitals and nursing homes may be taking them away from their regular jobs in areas like health care...

...Walz is also proposing to provide 50-million dollars in federal funding to nursing homes to help with the hiring and retention of staff. The Minnesota soldiers will start training as certified nursing assistants and as temporary nursing aides over the next week.    There are about 23-thousand job openings in Minnesota for long-term caregivers.
