(Willmar MN-) Willmar city officials are defending their decision to close down playground equipment in city parks. City Administrator Brian Gramentz says The Governor’s office said playgrounds should not be used. The Governor's Stay at Home Order allows individuals to go to available public parks and recreations lands consistent with remaining at least six feet apart from others. There has not been guidance from the state suggesting cities take specific actions like fencing off public playgrounds. Gramentz says there is no way to sanitize the playground equipment properly after every child’s use, and in most cases, staying 6 feet away would be hard to do with children and the condensed nature of playground equipment. He says they are using signage and caution tape to encourage people to select another type of outdoor recreation activity for their family members consistent with the social distancing guidelines. The Willmar dog park has been padlocked.
