(St. Cloud MN-) As the world mourns the loss of basketball legend Kobe Bryant and 8 others in Los Angeles Sunday, Stearns County Deputies remember the shock of finding out one of their own was killed in the crash of the National Guard Helicopter near Kimball December 5th. 28-year-old Sgt. Kort Plantenberg of Avon had been a correctional officer in the Stearns County Jail until this past summer, when he resigned to pursue his dream of being a helicopter pilot. His loss was especially hard on his former fellow correctional employees, as many are friends of Kort’s. In a recent newsletter, the sheriff's office said "In a wonderful display of thoughtfulness, kindness, respect and solidarity with our correctional officers, the St. Cloud Police Department Patrol Union took it upon themselves to provide a full meal to correctional staff from Chipotle on January 14th. Their actions re-enforced the family-like bond everyone in law enforcement has and are proud to be a part of."
