Albert Van Buren

Albert “Al” Van Buren, age 85, of Willmar, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 21, at Roseland Reformed Church and will be streamed on the church’s YouTube page. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, December 20, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Al was born on January 2, 1936, the son of the late William and Helen Van Buren.  Al was a graduate of Danube High School and a veteran of the United States Army.  He was united in marriage to Marilyn Sankey on August 29th, 1958, at the Roseland Reformed Church.  They were blessed with 63 years of marriage and three children: Mary Lee, Deborah, and Scott. 

Al worked most of his career at VSC in Clara City in various capacities.  Later, he worked in car sales until his retirement.  He was a man of faith and a lifelong member of the Roseland Reformed Church, where he served the church as an elder, deacon and various Reformed Church Synod roles. Al was a member of Gideons, Kiwanis, and WC Bassmasters.  His favorite past times were those spent with family.  He especially enjoyed his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and fishing with his son Scott.

Al is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children, Deborah (Vern) Erickson and Scott (Deb) Van Buren; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Lisa) Erickson, Thomas (Brianna) Erickson, Melissa (Tony) Van Buren Sorenson, Rob (Brittany) Erickson, and Andrew (Kylea) Erickson; eight great-grandchildren, Elijah, Charlie, Elizabeth, Easton, Madeline, Finn, Julia, and Amelia; and siblings, Ron (Ramona) Van Buren, Wally (Adina) Van Buren, and Marlys Walter.  He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary Lee Carlson (1985); and granddaughter, Jenna Lynn Van Buren (2009).

The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to Carris Health - Rice Memorial Hospital, Cancer Center, Health Care Center and Therapy Suites and Rice Hospice, for their professional care and kindness to Al and our family.
