Mary J. Bengtson, 79 of Willmar, died Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2019 at Peace Lutheran Church Chapel in New London. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. www.hafh.org
Mary Josephine Bengtson was born on December 2, 1939, at the birthing hospital in New London to Rudolph and Ellen (Anderson) Bengtson. She was baptized and confirmed at Lebanon Lutheran Church and grew up on the family farm near New London. She attended country grade school in district #8 and New London High School graduating in the class of 1957. Mary was described in her senior year book as “quiet, unassuming and friendly”. She was proud to have received the “Betty Crocker Home Maker-of-Tomorrow award. She continued her education at St. Cloud Teachers College and received her Bachelor of Science Degree on December 15, 1961.
Mary began teaching at Cosmos High School in 1962 as a english and civics teacher and part-time school librarian. She also taught in Royalton, Rugby, ND and Backus. She retired with a medical disability in 1972. In retirement, she made her home at the Willmar highrise apartments and later Divine House.
Mary died Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 79. She is survived by her brothers, Paul Bengtson of Spicer and Charles (Marilyn) Bengtson of Zeeland, MI; sisters-in-law, Kathy Oman, Joanne Batterberry and June Bengtson; and numerous nieces,nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Donald and Roger and nephew, Chad Bengtson.
