Minnie Zupke, age 96, of Willmar, died Sunday, February 21, at Bethesda Grand Nursing Home in Willmar.

Minnie Jennie Zupke was born October 27, 1924, in Norway Lake Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the daughter of Bennie and Gina (Evenson) Freese. She grew up in Norway Lake Township, was baptized and confirmed at South Lake Johanna Lutheran Church and attended country school through eighth grade. She then worked as a homemaker for the Erickson family. On February 21, 1945, she married Kermit Zupke and they made their home in Willmar and later moved to rural Lake Lillian. Minnie worked as a cook at Mel’s 7/71 Restaurant. After Kermit’s death in 1991, Minnie moved into Willmar.
Minnie was a member of Assembly of God Church in Willmar. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and gardening. She was a wonderful cook and baker. On Saturday mornings, her kitchen was always filled the aroma of fresh bread and rolls. She also loved making lefse and donuts.
She is survived by four children: Kathleen (and Larry) Balvitsch of Foley, MN, Valerie Mersch (and special friend Wally) of Fairfax, MN, Deborah Zupke (and Alan Seedorf) of Willmar, MN, and Mark (and Yvonne) Zupke of Lake Lillian, MN; twelve grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kermit; a daughter: Mary Russell; three brothers: James, Clifford, and Joseph; and three sisters: Bernice, Myrtle, and Ethel.
