Willmar was able to cap off the 2020 football season with another gem of a game on the road at Mollberg Field in Detroit Lakes. The Cardinals and Lakers traded back and forth through the first quarter, each team unable to muster any offense. That changed just a few minutes into the second quarter when Willmar quarterback Alex Schramm and wide receive Eli Jorgenson connected on a 67-yard touchdown pass and catch and the Cardinals were off and running.
On the next Detroit Lakes possession senior linebacker Tyler Ludwig picked off the Lakers’ Matthew Tobkin. That was Ludwig’s third interception of the season. Schramm found the end zone just a few plays later on a 44-yard dash and Willmar was up 14-0. After another solid defensive stop by the Cardinal defense, Schramm added to the Willmar lead with 10-yard touchdown run, 21-0 at the half.
After an early third quarter fumble by the Cardinals, Detroit Lakes had their best chance to get back into the game, but the Willmar defense came up with an impressive goal line stand and kept the Lakers out of the end zone and more importantly off the scoreboard. After another Willmar fumble, Detroit Lakes started to move the ball down the field and Ludwig once again picked off Tobkin, his second interception of the game. The Cardinals pushed their lead to 28-0 with a Michael Price one-yard plunge with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Cardinal defense wasn’t done impacting the game and just a few minutes later Brandt Sunder picked up a Lakers fumble and rumbled 30-yards for the scoop and score. Final score 35-0.
Willmar finishes the 2020 Football Season 6-2, with two wins in just four days. Cardinal quarterback Alex Schramm finished the game with 167 of Willmar’s 189 rushing yards and over 1,000 yards for the season.
