(Delano, MN) -- The Willmar Cardinals will try and win Section 6AAA and advance to the Class AAA State Baseball Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons when they take on The Benilde- St. Margaret's Red Knights tonight at 6pm at Delano Municipal Ballpark.
B-SM came back through the elimination bracket after losing in the second round to Delano 11-0. They avenged that defeat with a 4-2 win on Wednesday night over the Tigers. With the win the Red Knights have won three in a row to reach the finals but have to beat the Cardinals twice to claim a state berth.
For the Cardinals they have been dominant in their three straight wins without a loss in the playoffs stacking up wins over Edison, Mound-Westonka and the host team from Delano. The Cards go into tonight's game sporting a 21-2 record and last claimed the Section 6AAA title in 2018 when they went four-and-oh including a 3-2 win in the championship over B-SM.
Willmar is looking to make their fourth trip to state, they also qualified in 1987, their only state title, and 1974. For B-SM they have made four previous trips to state all since 2005. It would be their third since 2016 and they are the reigning section title holders when they were the undefeated team to reach the finals and beat the Cardinals 7-0 in the first game. The Cards had rallied back through the elim bracket after a second round loss.
