(Willmar, MN)-- It was an exciting finish in the second overtime as Junior Tanna Christensen scored the game winning goal just 32 seconds into the period. The Willmar Girls Hockey team defeated Northern Lakes by a score of 5-4 in the Section 6A Semifinal at Cardinal Arena in Willmar on Tuesday.
The Cardinals would score the first two goals of the contest. Bailey Olson and Mya Monson assisted each other in a pair of goals at 4:45 and 8:46 in the first period. Northern Lakes would go on to score the final goal of the period at 11:09, a powerplay goal by Alyssaa Koslowski.
Things would get interesting as the Lightening would get the puck passed Willmar goalie Bryton Carlson three more times in the second period. The Lightening went into the locker room at the end of the second with a 4-2 lead over the Cardinals.
Willmar came back to life in the third period. Sophomore Forward Nina Dawson skated to an unassisted powerplay goal at 5:45 in the third. Madison Garberding would tie things up 4-4 with a powerplay score that was assisted by Olson, and Christensen.
After a scoreless 8:32 of overtime hockey, Christensen would find the back of the net for the game winning goal.
With the win the Cards move to 17-8-1 on the season. Up next, the Number 1 seed Willmar Cardinals will move on to battle the River Lakes Stars, the Number 3 seed, in the 6A Finals. The first time in seventeen years the Willmar Cardinal girls have advanced to the Section Finals. The location of that match-up will be in Alexandria at the Runestone Hockey Arena.
